Welcome to Walkergate Community School

We are a large primary school for children aged 2 to 11 in Walkergate, in Newcastle’s east end. We work across two sites: our main school on Sutton Street, and a separate early years site where our nursery welcomes children aged 2, 3 and 4, with 15 or 30 funded hours available for eligible families. The school is part of NEAT Academy Trust. Our school motto is ‘Together we make a difference’. 

We are also home to Newcastle Research School, part of the national Research Schools Network supported by the Education Endowment Foundation. Through this work, we share research-based training with schools across the region to develop teachers’ expertise and skills.

Our staff are dedicated to working with children, parents and families to ensure that all Walkergate children achieve their very best in everything they do, in a safe, happy and nurturing environment. Staff regularly go the extra mile to support our children and families. The school is popular in the local area, and we are lucky to have generations of families coming through the school, which creates a real sense of community.

Our approach to behaviour is built on strong relationships between staff and pupils. We encourage all children to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour, and all adults in school have high expectations. We promote and celebrate three core values: Aspire, Belong and Care. Visitors to our school always comment on the calm atmosphere and how polite and friendly our children are.

Ofsted has judged Walkergate to be a good school, and our most recent inspection in April 2025 confirmed that we have maintained those standards. Inspectors described us as ‘a large school with an even larger heart’ and found that our safeguarding arrangements are effective. You can read the full report on our Ofsted page.

There is a free breakfast club on both sites for children in Reception and Years 1 to 6. After school, we offer a range of clubs for Years 1 to 6, such as computing, Lego and drama, which are always popular, and the school takes part in a wide range of sporting activities and competitions.
