At Walkergate we recognise that Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. We aim to provide a high-quality mathematics education which enables children to reason mathematically, and develop an appreciation and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about Maths. Mathematics is taught contextually, giving the Mathematics the children are taught meaning and relevance to daily life. Vocabulary is a crucial part of Mathematics at Walkergate Community School, pupils are exposed to and taught a range of mathematical vocabulary which supports their understanding and reasoning. We aspire to develop fluency and encourage application of knowledge to develop children to be confident mathematicians, who enjoy mathematics and are resilient when solving problems.
Through the National Curriculum for Maths, Walkergate Community School aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Ensure that all children become fluent in the essentials of mathematics by giving them varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex
problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. - Support children to be able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and developing an argument, justification or proof to support their theories using mathematical language.
- Support children and develop their perseverance in seeking solutions, ensuring that they make connections across mathematical ideas through re-visiting content whilst giving also giving them opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.
- Develop a sense of “mastering number” in Early Years Foundation Stage which can provide the building blocks for future learning.
