NEAT Business Breakfast Invite
Celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Week at NEAT Academy Trust
This week, NEAT Academy Trust is joining schools and communities across the UK to recognise Dyslexia Awareness Week 2024. This week is a chance to celebrate the unique strengths of people with dyslexia and to raise awareness about this learning difference, which affects up to one in ten people in the UK.
Dyslexia may impact reading, writing, and spelling, but it doesn’t define intelligence or limit potential. At NEAT, we’re committed to ensuring every one of our learners has the support they need to succeed. For pupils with dyslexia, this means providing extra help, resources, and personalised strategies tailored to their needs.
How NEAT Schools are Supporting Pupils with Dyslexia
Across NEAT, our schools are working hard to make sure pupils with dyslexia feel supported, understood, and included in every aspect of school life. Here are just a few ways they’re doing it:
- – Benfield School uses simple but powerful tools like coloured overlays and specially designed whiteboard slides to make reading easier for pupils who struggle with text. They also run targeted intervention programmes, working closely with the Local Authority to ensure every pupil gets the right support in school and life.
- – West Walker Primary School creates personalised Support Plans to fit each child’s needs. For some pupils, this might mean using visual reminders of commonly confused letters. In contrast, others take part in interventions that give them strategies to boost their confidence and help them tackle learning challenges.
- – Central Walker Church of England Primary School uses practical approaches, such as the Alphabet Arc, precision teaching, and assistive technology, to help children develop their reading and spelling skills.
- Tilly, a Year 6 pupil, shared how her own mini library in the classroom has helped her grow her confidence and love for reading.
Celebrating the Strengths of Pupils with Dyslexia
At NEAT, we recognise that pupils with dyslexia bring a lot to our schools, including creativity, problem-solving skills, and fresh ways of thinking. By raising awareness and providing the right support, we want every one of our young people to thrive and reach their full potential.
As we mark Dyslexia Awareness Week, we’re inviting our school communities to continue learning about dyslexia, challenge old ideas, and celebrate the unique contributions pupils with dyslexia make to our schools.
Thank you to our dedicated staff for all the support you give to children with dyslexia. Your work makes a real difference every day.
