Our Approach to Behaviour

At Walkergate Community School, we believe that positive behaviour creates a safe, respectful, and encouraging learning environment. Our Behaviour Policy, known as The Walkergate Way, promotes responsibility, kindness, and resilience within our school community.

Key Principles of Our Behaviour Policy

We are committed to:

  • Encouraging Positive Behaviour: We support our pupils to be resilient, respectful, and responsible.
  • Creating a Safe Environment: We aim to provide a learning environment free from disruption, bullying, or intimidation.
  • Working in Partnership with Families: We work closely with parents and carers to ensure consistent support for positive behaviour.

Our Behaviour Standards

Our Behaviour Policy is built on The Walkergate Way, which includes our school values:

  • Aspire: Encourage every pupil to strive for their personal best.
  • Belong: Create a strong sense of community within the school.
  • Care: Prioritise health, welfare, and well-being.

These values are reinforced through character habits like resilience, empathy, self-awareness, positivity, communication, and teamwork.

Positive Reinforcement and Rewards

Positive behaviour is recognised and celebrated:

  • Praise and Recognition: Staff members use positive feedback and acknowledge good behaviour.
  • Classroom Dojos: Points awarded for positive behaviour, contributing to a safe and encouraging classroom.
  • Recognition Assemblies: Weekly assemblies to celebrate achievements and recognise pupils’ efforts.

Managing Behaviour Challenges

We address behaviour challenges with a restorative approach, encouraging pupils to understand and take responsibility for their actions:

  • Behaviour Footsteps: A stepped approach for managing behaviour, from verbal reminders to reflection time, and parental involvement if needed.
  • Restorative Conversations: Discussions to help pupils understand the impact of their actions and how to improve.
  • Individual Support Plans: Tailored support is available for pupils who need additional guidance.

Special Support for Pupils with Additional Needs

Our approach to behaviour supports the diverse needs of our pupils:

  • Individualised Support: We adjust our approach to meet the unique needs of each child, in partnership with parents and support services.
  • External Support: We work with educational psychologists, behaviour specialists, and other professionals as needed.
  • Inclusive Environment: Our restorative practices aim to make every pupil feel valued and supported.
